Clown Loach - Chromobotia Macracanthus
Not applicable with Auction Items
Clown loaches (Chromobotia macracanthus) are popular, colorful freshwater fish known for their playful behavior, like swimming upside down or playing dead, and their ability to eat snails, making them great for community tanks. They are omnivores that need a large tank (100+ gallons for adults), plenty of hiding spots, and a varied diet, including sinking pellets and live/frozen foods, and should be kept in groups to feel secure. They are generally peaceful but can grow large (up to 12 inches) and require specific water parameters (72-86°F, pH 6.0-7.5).
Key Characteristics
Appearance: Bright orange with thick, black, vertical stripes that have white borders; pointed snout with barbels (whiskers).
Behavior: Active, social, and playful; often seen in groups; known to "play dead" or swim upside down.
Diet: Omnivores; enjoy sinking pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetables; excellent snail eaters.
Size: Can reach up to 12 inches (30 cm) in an aquarium, so they need a very large tank as adults.
Temperament: Peaceful and semi-aggressive; good community fish, but avoid aggressive tank mates or fish small enough to be eaten.
Aquarium Care
Tank Size: Minimum 100 gallons, but 180+ gallons is recommended for a group of adults.
Water Parameters: Temperature 72-86°F (24-30°C), pH 6.0-7.5, dKH 8-12.
Setup: Provide plenty of hiding places like driftwood, rocks, and plants, as well as open swimming space.
Tank Mates: Peaceful community fish like tetras, gouramis, and corydoras.
Maintenance: Regular water changes are crucial; they are susceptible to Ich (white spot disease).
Important Considerations
Schooling: They are social and need to be kept in groups (ideally 6 or more) to feel secure and be active.
Growth: They start small but grow very large, so be prepared to upgrade tanks as they mature.
Defense: They have a spine under each eye that can be extended when threatened, which can be painful.
