Stenodactylus petrii, also known as the dune gecko or Egyptian sand gecko, is a small, nocturnal gecko found in the arid regions of North Africa and the Middle East. It is well-adapted to sandy environments with fringed toes for movement and a pale, sandy color for camouflage. These geckos are insectivores that burrow in the sand to escape the heat during the day and emerge at night to hunt. 

Characteristics

Size: Adults typically reach about 10 cm (4 inches) in length. 

Appearance: They have a pale, sandy coloration and large eyes for nocturnal activity. Their toes have a fringe that helps them move across loose sand. 

Behavior: They are nocturnal and burrow into the sand to hide from predators and the heat of the day. 

Diet: They are insectivores, feeding on small insects and other invertebrates. 

Habitat and distribution

Habitat: Arid, sandy, and rocky grassland regions. 

Distribution: Found across North Africa and the Middle East, including countries like Israel.
