The Gem Tang (Zebrasoma gemmatum) is one of the most exclusive, highly prized, and visually striking marine aquarium fish in the saltwater hobby. Known for its jet-black body covered in a galaxy of brilliant white-to-blue spots and a vibrant yellow tail, this reef-safe surgeonfish commands a premium price due to its rare collection from deep-water surge zones in the Western Indian Ocean.Core Requirements & Quick SpecsMinimum Tank Size: 180 gallons is heavily recommended to accommodate their highly active nature and long-term growth.Adult Size: Can grow up to 8 to 10 inches in length.Lifespan: 10 to 15+ years with proper care and stable water parameters.Temperament: Semi-aggressive. They are generally peaceful toward non-tang tank mates but can become highly territorial toward similar-looking Zebrasoma species (such as Yellow or Purple Tangs).
Essential Care Guidelines
- Herbivorous Diet: They are primarily grazers. Their diet should be heavily focused on high-quality algae, daily seaweed/nori sheets, and spirulina-based pellets, supplemented occasionally with frozen mysis or brine shrimp.
- Aquascape Design: Provide an open aquascape featuring long swimming "runways," arches, and large live-rock structures. This encourages natural grazing while ensuring plenty of hiding spaces to minimize stress.
- Disease Prevention: Because of their steep financial investment, a strict 4 to 6-week quarantine protocol is strongly advised to watch for marine ich or velvet before introducing them to a display tank
