The giant dead leaf mantis, scientifically known as Deroplatys desiccata, is a large mantis species native to Southeast Asia, known for its remarkable camouflage that resembles dead leaves.

Appearance and Size

The giant dead leaf mantis is characterized by its flattened body and intricate leaf-like patterns on its wings, which help it blend into its environment. It varies in color from mottled brown to dark brown, aiding its camouflage. Females typically grow to 75–80 mm (about 3–3.1 inches), while males are slightly smaller at 65–70 mm (about 2.5–2.8 inches). The mantis has a distinctive prothorax that resembles a leaf, enhancing its ability to avoid detection by predators. 

Habitat

This species is found in scrubland and tropical forests across regions such as Borneo, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sumatra, and the Philippines. They thrive in humid environments and are often found among dead leaves or tree bark, where their appearance provides excellent camouflage against predators.
