Israeli Gold Scorpion - Scorpio maurus

Scorpio maurus is a species of scorpion, commonly known as the large-clawed scorpion or Israeli golden scorpion, found in North Africa and the Middle East. It is a burrowing species with large pincers and a relatively small tail, which suggests its venom is not highly potent. These scorpions are often found in desert and dry forest habitats and are known for their ability to detect vibrations through their sensory hairs. 

Characteristics

Appearance: Medium to large size, with bulky, boxing glove-style claws and a small tail. Color varies by subspecies but is often yellow to reddish-brown.

Behavior: Excellent burrowers, creating deep burrows in the ground. They are often found under leaves, bark, and other cover.

Venom: Mildly venomous, with a painful but generally harmless sting for healthy humans. They often use their large claws for defense instead of their stinger.

Senses: Possess sensory hairs on their claws, legs, and tail to detect vibrations from prey.

Bioluminescence: Like many scorpions, their exoskeleton glows a turquoise-green under a fluorescent UV light. 

Habitat and distribution

Geographic range: Found across North Africa (e.g., Morocco, Algeria, Egypt) and the Middle East (e.g., Israel, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia). 

Habitat: Primarily desert environments, but also found in dry forests. They require substrates that allow for burrowing. 

Diet

Carnivorous: Feeds on insects. 

Lifespan

Females: 5-7 years.

Males: 3-5 years.
