Julidochromis marlieri, or Marlier's Julie, is a popular, cave-dwelling cichlid from Lake Tanganyika, known for its striking black and white checkerboard pattern and elongated body. This territorial but relatively peaceful fish requires a rocky aquarium with caves and hard, alkaline water, and is best kept in pairs or species-specific tanks to manage its aggressive tendencies, especially during breeding.

Key Characteristics

Appearance: Creamy white or yellowish body with bold black spots and stripes, often with yellow pectoral fins and blue-lined fins.

Size: Grows to about 4–6 inches (10–15 cm).

Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa, preferring rocky shorelines.

Temperament: Territorial and semi-aggressive, especially when breeding; best kept in pairs or a single-species tank.

Aquarium Care

Tank Setup: Needs a rock-heavy aquascape with plenty of caves and crevices for hiding and breeding.

Water Parameters: Hard, alkaline water (pH 7.8–9.0) and temperatures of 74–80°F (23–27°C) are ideal.

Diet: Carnivorous, accepting high-quality pellets, frozen, and live foods like brine shrimp.

Behavior & Breeding

Social: Forms monogamous pairs and is known for its acrobatic swimming style.

Breeding: The female guards eggs while the male guards the area; parents often stay with offspring, but fry should be removed once they reach about 1 inch to prevent them from being eaten.
