The magnificent foxface (Siganus magnificus), also known as the magnificent rabbitfish, is a species of marine ray-finned fish found in the eastern Indian Ocean. It is a popular addition to aquariums because it is a hardy fish that is generally peaceful and helps control algae growth.

Characteristics

Appearance: The magnificent foxface is noted for its striking appearance. Its face is white with a bold black band that runs over its eyes. The front half of its body is typically white, and the back half is dark brown to black. Its dorsal and anal fins are bordered with vibrant yellow or red.

Venomous spines: Like other rabbitfish, the magnificent foxface possesses venomous spines in its dorsal and anal fins. While the venom is considered low in toxicity, a sting can be painful. Care should be taken when handling this fish to avoid injury.

Size: This species can grow up to 9 inches (22–24 cm) in length.

Behavior: Magnificent foxfaces are generally peaceful but can be territorial toward other rabbitfish. In the wild, they are often found in pairs, while juveniles are more secretive and solitary. When threatened, they may display their venomous spines or rapidly change their body color as a defensive mechanism.

Habitat and diet

Habitat: The magnificent foxface is native to the Andaman Sea, inhabiting sheltered coral reefs where it finds protection among branching corals.

Diet: They are primarily herbivores that graze on marine algae and other vegetable matter. A well-fed magnificent foxface may also consume small invertebrates.

Aquarium care

Tank size: A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended for this fish to provide ample swimming and grazing room.

Tank setup:

Include plenty of live rock to encourage algae growth for grazing and provide hiding spots.

Maintain some open swimming areas.

Use low to moderate lighting.

Water parameters: Recommended water parameters include:

Temperature: 74°–80°F (23°–27°C)

pH: 8.1–8.4

Specific Gravity: 1.020–1.025

Diet in captivity: To ensure a healthy diet and discourage nipping at corals, supplement natural algae growth with high-quality vegetable-based foods such as marine seaweed, spirulina, and various flake foods.

Compatibility:

Generally peaceful with other non-rabbitfish species, including more aggressive fish that respect its venomous spines.

It's best to keep only one rabbitfish per aquarium unless it's very large, as they can be aggressive toward other rabbitfish.

Considered "reef safe with caution." While a well-fed magnificent foxface is unlikely to harm corals, it may nip at soft and large polyp stony (LPS) corals if it gets hungry.
