Neolamprologus ocellatus, commonly known as the ocellated shell-dweller, is a small, popular cichlid from Lake Tanganyika, Africa, famous for living and breeding in empty snail shells. These territorial fish are known for their vibrant colors (often gold or blue), intelligence, and unique behavior of fiercely defending their shell homes, making them a fascinating but aggressive species for aquariums, best kept in species-only tanks with plenty of shells and sandy substrate.

Key Characteristics

Habitat: Endemic to Lake Tanganyika, Africa, where they live among rocks and shells on the lakebed.

Appearance: Varies by color morph (e.g., gold, blue), but generally small, with males being larger and having pointed dorsal fins with a yellow/orange trim, while females have rounded fins with a white trim.

Size: Adults typically reach about 2-2.5 inches (5-6 cm).

Behavior: Highly territorial and aggressive, especially males defending their shell; they will nip at intruders. They use snail shells for shelter, breeding, and raising young.

Diet: Carnivorous, eating small invertebrates and zooplankton; they accept high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen foods like brine shrimp.

Aquarium Care

Tank Setup: Requires a sandy substrate and numerous empty snail shells (like apple snail shells) for each fish.

Water: Hard, alkaline water (pH 7.8-8.6) with temperatures between 75-82°F (24-28°C).

Tank Mates: Best kept in a species-only tank or with other Tanganyikan cichlids that occupy different areas of the tank, as they are aggressive.

Grouping: A single male with several females is a good setup, or a single male-female pair.
