The rhinoceros iguana (Cyclura cornuta) is a large, herbivorous lizard from the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, named for the horn-like scales on its snout, especially prominent in males. These diurnal reptiles live in rocky, dry areas, eating plants but occasionally insects. They are known for their strong build, powerful tails, and ability to deliver a strong bite when threatened, despite being generally calm.

Key Characteristics

Appearance: Heavy-bodied with a grey, brown, or olive-green color; males have 3-5 horn-like protrusions on their snout.

Size: Can grow up to 4.5 feet (1.2 m) long, including the tail.

Diet: Primarily herbivorous (leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds), but young may eat insects and carrion.

Habitat: Endemic to Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), preferring dry forests and rocky areas with crevices for shelter.

Behavior: Diurnal (active during the day), solitary, and basks in the sun; can be aggressive when cornered, using bites and tail whips.
