The Porcellio dilatatus "Rust" is a striking orange-brown color morph of the popular Giant Canyon Isopod (Porcellio dilatatus), prized for its large size, heavy burrowing habits, and utility in bioactive setups. [1, 2]
Physical Characteristics & Behavior
  • Size: Adults grow wide and reach lengths of about 1.8 to 2.5 cm (0.7 to 1 inch).
  • Color: Features warm orange, rust, and reddish-brown tones.
  • Burrowing: Unlike surface-dwelling species, they love to dig and build complex subterranean tunnel systems.
  • Defense: Known to "play dead" (tonic immobility) and curl into a C-shape rather than rolling into a tight ball when disturbed. [1, 2, 3, 4]
    Care Requirements
  • Temperature: Keep between 59–79°F (15–26°C), thriving best at normal room temperature (70–78°F). [1, 2]
  • Humidity: Medium (50–70%). They prefer a drier, drought-tolerant overall setup compared to tropical species, but require a designated moisture gradient with a damp moss hide. [1, 2]
  • Substrate: Provide 2 to 4 inches (or 5–10 cm) of deep, moisture-retaining organic substrate (like ABG mix or coco coir) to support their heavy digging. [1, 2, 3]
  • Diet: Feed rotting wood, leaf litter, decaying plant matter, vegetables (carrots, zucchini), and supplemental protein (fish food, dried shrimp) alongside a reliable calcium source like cuttlebone. [1]
  • When shipping live animals, 24 shipping is required for almost all. Shipping may be adjusted by AO due to holidays, weather conditions, or customer confirmation to be available.
