The Yo-Yo Loach (Botia almorhae) is an active, social, bottom-dwelling freshwater fish known for its "Yo-Yo" pattern as a juvenile, which develops into a complex maze-like design as it matures. Native to the Ganges River system, it's an omnivore that enjoys a varied diet, including live/frozen foods and sinking pellets, and is excellent for community tanks, though it can be semi-aggressive and needs plenty of hiding spots. They are best kept in groups of at least three and are known for their entertaining behavior, including eating pest snails.

Key Characteristics

Appearance: Silvery-white body with black markings that look like "Yo-Yo" in juveniles, becoming a more intricate pattern as adults.

Size: Can reach up to 6 inches, but often stays around 4-5 inches in aquariums.

Temperament: Active, inquisitive, and social; can be semi-aggressive, so keeping them in groups of 3 or more is recommended to diffuse aggression.

Diet: Omnivorous; eats flakes, pellets, live/frozen foods (like bloodworms), and is great at eating pest snails.

Habitat: Bottom dweller that needs plenty of caves, hiding places, and smooth substrate like sand.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size: Minimum 40 gallons, but larger is better, especially for groups.

Water Parameters: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 74–81°F (23–27°C).

Tank Mates: Compatible with many fish, but avoid fin-nippers. They do well with durable plants like Java Fern and Anubias.

Behavior: Very active during the day, unlike some other loaches, and will sift through substrate for food.
